An encounter between two generations of European jazz deeply rooted in the tradition yet at the same time radiating timeless freshness and youthful esprit. A distinctive sense of groove, intimate interplay, inventive spirit and artful melodic counterpoint characterize this trio, which presents its second album "Pourquoi" on enja records. While their debut album “Manoir de mes rêves” was about Paris in the 1950s with compositions by Georges Brassens, Henri Salvador and Django Reinhardt, “Pourquoi” focuses on their original compositions. An ideal springboard for the superb interaction of these three individualists. Catherine, Morello and Faller have been able to mature their art in over 50 performances throughout Europe and have found a chamber music quality that thrives on listening and reacting.

With humor and depth, August Zirner and Sven Faller tell stories of departure and arrival, based on their grandmothers' love stories. While the young American Zirner flees the Vietnam War to Austria, the country his parents fled in 1938, the young German is drawn to America, from where his grandmother's Jewish fiancé returned after 30 years to fulfill his marriage vows.

An intimate musical dialogue between flute and double bass continues the stories and playfully reinvents Roland Kirk’s "Serenade to a cuckoo“, Ellington’s "Caravan“ and J. S. Bach's „Bourrée" among other gems.

This trio plays with telepathic ease and has a tight, intuitive interplay. Whether igniting a club like the legendary Birdland in Neuburg with the dedicated burner “Cookin’ at the Birdland” or whispering the gentle notes of a ballad, Morello, Faller and Martins bring rare finesse and stylistic range to the table.

The spectrum is wide: jazz-inflected choros that unfold with Brazilian lyricism, bluesy funk grooves reminiscent of Wes Montgomery, and reimagined standards with a Brazilian twist. Originals like "Entre as Ondas" recall the elegance of A. C. Jobim, while the trio glides effortlessly through the free-flowing spirit of modern jazz.

Alternating with duo performances that introduce the musical oeuvre of each artist are personal stories and topics that have significantly shaped their lives.

In addition to their outstanding musical work, each guest brings a special story: Some were born abroad and have a very unique perspective on their adopted homeland, others have traveled the world, overcame obstacles, and discovered new worlds.
